Progress Energy co-sponsors MATHCOUNTS competition with VGCC

Progress Energy recently presented a contribution to Vance-Granville Community College to support the local chapter-level MATHCOUNTS competition for middle school students, which the college hosts each year. MATHCOUNTS is a national competition program designed to provide middle-school students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers by promoting achievement in math. The program is supported and administered by the National Society of Professional Engineers and its state affiliates such as the Professional Engineers of North Carolina (PENC). In addition to PENC, VGCC and Progress Energy, this year’s local co-sponsors for MATHCOUNTS were Piedmont Community College and Novozymes.

Progress Energy, the Fortune 250 power company based in Raleigh, is a longtime supporter of VGCC. The company has endowed a Presidential Merit Award-level scholarship at the college and provided five $1,000 annual scholarships for VGCC students this year. The company has also co-sponsored VGCC Endowment Fund golf tournaments and VGCC’s annual business EXPO, in addition to MATHCOUNTS.
