VGCC Radiography program earns renewed Accreditation

The Radiography program at Vance-Granville Community College was recently awarded renewed accreditation by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). The re-accreditation is the result of an evaluation by JRCERT officials during a site visit in October 2009 and their thorough review of the program. VGCC’s accreditation will continue for eight more years, the maximum duration that may be awarded by the JRCERT in Radiologic Sciences.

“This eight-year accreditation is a testament to the outstanding leadership and hard work of the Radiography Program faculty,” said VGCC President Randy Parker. “Their commitment to excellence ensures that our graduates are well-trained professionals who are ready to play vital roles in our hospitals and other health-care facilities.” The faculty includes program head Angela Thomas and instructors Jennifer B. Johnson, Estelle Alston, Priscilla Wells and Anthony Twisdale. Thomas said that when the lengthy re-accreditation process began, she was still new in her position as head of the program. “I am grateful for the support of my faculty and administration,” she said. “I know they can appreciate the hard work, sweat, and tears that were put into this process. I cannot express the emotions that I experienced when I received the good news.”

Based at VGCC’s South Campus between Creedmoor and Butner, the two-year Radiography curriculum prepares graduates to be radiographers, skilled health care professionals who use radiation to produce images of the human body. In addition to classroom and lab instruction offered at the South Campus in Granville County, students gain hands-on clinical experience at area hospitals. Both in 2008 and in 2009, 100 percent of graduates of the program passed the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists national examination.

JRCERT, the only agency recognized by the United States Department of Education for the accreditation of educational programs in radiography, promotes excellence in education and enhances quality and safety of patient care through the accreditation of educational programs. Accreditation of a program helps students, patients, educators and members of the profession to know that graduates have the requisite knowledge, skills, and values to competently perform the range of professional responsibilities expected by potential employers nationwide. It also assures they will be eligible for licensure in all 50 states.
