VGCC Golf team finishes fourth at Regional Championship

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s golf team competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X Championship on April 10-11 at Stryker Golf Course in Fort Bragg.

At the conclusion of the two-round tournament, the best team score, 619, belonged to the squad from Sandhills Community College. Louisburg College came in a close second with 625. Johnston Community College, which like VGCC plays in NJCAA Division II, came in third with a team score of 643. The VGCC Vanguards scored 674 as a team, for fourth place, while Surry Community College trailed in fifth with a score of 690.

With its third-place showing, Johnston CC earned the right to represent Region X at the Division II national championship tournament. The other teams that participated in the regional tournament play in Division III.

Tyler Woodside of Oxford scored an 82 in the first round and a 79 in the second, for a total of 161, the lowest score among members of the VGCC team. Woodside tied for ninth among all players in the tournament. Tommy Overcash of Henderson was not far behind his teammate, with a score of 167 (92 in the first round, 75 in the second). Others participating for VGCC included Michael Reese and Jeremy Radford, both of Henderson, Daniel Schmoyer of Franklinton, Chris Dove of Wake Forest and Josh Lorenzo of Durham.

The regional tournament marked the end of the VGCC golf program’s second season, and the first for the team at the NJCAA level.
