Chef to teach VGCC Food Preparation course

Vance-Granville Community College will offer evening classes in food preparation, featuring hands-on training by a professional chef.

The four-week “Introduction to Meal Preparation” course will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday nights, July 13 through Aug. 5. Classes will be held from 6 until 9 p.m. and will meet a total of eight times. All training is conducted in the commercial kitchen at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford.

The course will cover various aspects of food purchasing, utilization of kitchen equipment and utensils, and the actual preparation of appetizers, entrees, desserts and sauces. The class will appeal to those already employed in the food service industry, those desiring to enter the food service industry, and those seeking training in food preparation. Occupational Extension credits are available for students who successfully complete the course.

The instructor is Chef David Filippini, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America who has worked in various eateries in New York and North Carolina. He comes to VGCC with a well-rounded knowledge of food preparation and design. He has taught part-time for the college’s two-year Culinary Technology degree program .
