VGCC Golf team hosts colleges at Henderson Country Club

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s golf team recently played its first matches as a host team for the 2010 season at Henderson Country Club.

On March 16, in the first of the two home matches, VGCC finished in first place, with a team score of 336. Erie Community College of Buffalo, N.Y. was the runner-up, scoring 340. Johnston Community College was close behind with 341, while Louisburg College posted a team score of 353. The Erie CC team, based more than 500 miles away from Henderson, was in the area for one week to play various matches and tournaments, including the two hosted by VGCC.

VGCC’s Tommy Overcash had the best score — 79 — among not only his teammates but among all players in the match. Other Vanguards playing included Tyler Woodside, Daniel Schmoyer, Michael Reese, Chris Dove, Jeremy Radford and Joshua Lorenzo.

Two days later, the same teams, in addition to Surry Community College and Central Carolina Community College, reassembled for another day of golf at Henderson Country Club. This time, the Hurricanes from Louisburg College had the best team score, with 302. Johnston CC placed second, with a team score of 331, and VGCC came in third with 343. Erie CC, Surry CC and Central Carolina CC placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Again, Tommy Overcash was the top golfer for VGCC, shooting a 77. Schmoyer, Reese, Dove and Radford also played for the Vanguards.
