VGCC Golf team tees off for second season

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s golf team plans to play in at least eight intercollegiate matches or tournaments this spring during the team’s second season. The 2010 season is the first for the team at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) level, having played as a club sport in 2009.

The Vanguards started the season by playing Thursday, March 11 at Pine Hollow Country Club in Clayton against host Johnston Community College. The first home match for VGCC is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16. VGCC’s home course is Henderson Country Club, located off Oxford Road in Henderson.

Other dates on the schedule include road trips to Louisburg College and Surry Community College.

After the regular season ends in April, the VGCC team is scheduled to participate in the NJCAA Region X Championship on April 10-11 at Stryker Golf Course in Fayetteville.

Returning as coach for the team is Frank Hester of Henderson. Hester has golfed for many years and has played on the Keller Williams Amateur Golf Tour. A graduate of Henderson High School and Wake Technical Community College, Hester plays in many local golf tournaments and is the president of the board of directors for the Kerr Lake Country Club.
