VGCC Community Band to present spring concert

The Vance-Granville Community Band will present a variety of musical selections at its Spring Concert, billed as “From English Pageantry to the American Civil War,” on Sunday, March 7. The program will begin at 4 p.m. in the Civic Center on the college’s main campus in Vance County. Admission is $5, but free for children age 11 and under.

Michael Stephenson, the college’s music instructor and director of the band, said that the concert will include “American Civil War Fantasy,” composer Jerry Bilik’s work that incorporates several songs from the Civil War era; “English Folk Song Suite” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, scheduled to be directed by J.F. Webb High School band director Clint McCaskill; “The Spirit of Pageantry” by Percy Fletcher; “Clear Track Polka” by Eduard Strauss; and “La Bamba de Vera Cruz” by Terig Tucci. Also, the band will perform “October” by Eric Whitacre in memory of former band member Marty Barnett, who passed away in December.

Formed in 2008, the community band is a combination of VGCC students and interested citizens. All four counties of the VGCC service area (Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin) are represented in the band, which has grown to approximately 50 members.
