VGCC establishes memorial fund for Dunn
The Vance-Granville Community College Student Government Association is establishing the Raymond Dunn Memorial Fund to support the late student’s family during this difficult time. The 20-year-old sophomore and leading member of the VGCC Vanguards basketball team died Feb. 20 after collapsing during a home game.
On Feb. 24, the fund began with donations from VGCC President Randy Parker and from Rockele Bryant, the president of the Student Government Association and student member of the VGCC Board of Trustees. “We would like to call upon the entire VGCC family — students, faculty and staff alike — to participate by donating to this fund in any amount,” Parker said. “All of us have been touched by the sudden loss of Raymond Dunn, a rising star whose light burned brightly while he was here with us and was extinguished too quickly. Now is the time for all of us to come together to support Raymond’s family.”
Bryant added that she knew Dunn as a fellow Criminal Justice student. “I will always remember Raymond’s great personality. He constantly had a smile on his face and loved to make us all laugh,” Bryant said. “I challenge all students to honor our classmate, Raymond, by contributing a minimum of one dollar to this fund.”
Raymond Dunn displayed excellence both on and off the basketball court. He was the leading scorer for the Vanguards during both his seasons on the team. In January 2010, he was named NJCAA Division II Player of the Week after a series of performances that included scoring 52 points and 30 rebounds in a single game. With a perfect 4.0 GPA for both the fall and summer semesters, Dunn had just been named to the VGCC Dean’s List for the fall semester that ended in December 2009. He is remembered by fellow students and teachers for being active in the Criminal Justice Club and for his outgoing personality.
To contribute to the fund, make checks payable to VGCC, and send them to the VGCC Business Office, at P.O. Box 917, Henderson, NC 27536. Indicate in the memo line of the check that the donation is for the Raymond Dunn Memorial Fund. Donors may also call VGCC at (252) 738-3494 to contribute using a credit card.
