VGCC seeks Women’s Volleyball players

Vance-Granville Community College’s new women’s volleyball program is looking for women interested in having fun and making history in the process.

“You can be a member of Vance-Granville’s first volleyball team, which is exciting and historic by itself,” said Coach Ellis Crews of Oxford, who heads the new athletic team. “At the same time, your participation will benefit your social, physical and mental well-being.” Crews said that student-athletes can help build school spirit while enhancing their own education. He added that volleyball ranks second only to soccer as the world’s most popular participant sport.

Women’s volleyball will become the college’s third intercollegiate sport , following men’s basketball and golf. VGCC joined the National Junior College Athletic Association in 2008.

Crews said that summer workouts for the Vanguards are already underway, and tryouts will be held on Monday, Aug. 3 and Tuesday, Aug. 4 from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. at Western Vance High School in Henderson. Previous experience playing organized volleyball is not required. For more information, contact Coach Crews at (919) 690-5269 or pepc@gloryroad.net.

Crews is best known locally for his five-year run as the head coach for girls’ volleyball at his alma mater, J.F. Webb High School in Oxford. He was named Mid-State Coach of the Year three times. His teams won four straight Mid-State regular season championships and one eastern regional championship, and were the runners-up for the state championship in 2006.

VGCC’s first volleyball season is currently scheduled to run from early September through late October, with a regional tournament in November. Opponents will include colleges from all over the state. The Vanguards’ home court will be at Aycock Recreation Complex in Henderson.
