VGCC Computer classes start in July at Main Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will offer several of its popular computer-related classes for area residents starting in July on the college’s main campus in Vance County.

Three day courses include one on Microsoft Word and Excel 2007. Students will familiarize themselves with the popular word processing and spreadsheet programs, which were extensively revamped in their most recent versions. Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., July 8 through Aug. 12. Laura Peace is the instructor.

Another day course focuses on QuickBooks, the powerful accounting system for small businesses. Kathy Strickland will teach the class, which will be held on Mondays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., July 13 through Aug. 17.

A class on Microsoft PowerPoint 2007, the presentation software program used by business people, educators, students and trainers, will be held on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., July 21 through Aug. 4. VGCC Office Administration instructor Amy O’Geary will teach the course.

Two other courses will be offered at night. One, the “Beginner’s Guide to Computers & Internet,” is the perfect first class for students who have limited knowledge of computers. Microsoft Windows XP will be used to introduce novice students to the common components and many uses of personal computers through the Windows environment. Classes are scheduled for Thursday evenings from 6 until 10 p.m., July 9 through Aug. 13. Laura Peace is the instructor.

While on summer break, area teachers can take advantage of an upcoming VGCC course specifically designed to help professional educators better utilize their classroom computers. “Using Microsoft Office in the Classroom” counts as 24 contact hours (2.4 CEUs) and is designed to provide instruction in the most basic and useful features of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007. The class will meet on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6 until 10 p.m., July 13 through July 29. O’Geary is also the instructor for this course.
