VGCC Instructor contributes to Military Education

Carla May of Wake Forest, an instructor and head of the Pharmacy Technology program at Vance-Granville Community College, recently served on a team for a national program that helps members of the U.S. armed services obtain recognition for education they receive while in service. May (pictured above, in the Pharmacy lab on the college’s main campus) helped evaluate courses at the Naval Medicine Education and Training Command in Portsmouth, Virginia, for the American Council on Education (ACE)’s Military Evaluations Program. She called the Navy facility a “top-notch operation.” May reviewed pharmacy technician education for all four branches of the military and examined how such education equates with VGCC’s curriculum. Her evaluation team’s work will allow members of the military to transfer their credits into a pharmacy technology program at a community college.

“The knowledge and skill that Ms. May has demonstrated are appreciated and valued highly by the ACE staff as well as other members of the team,” said Cynthia Bruce, director of military evaluations for ACE. The result of May’s work can be found online in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services (www.militaryguides.acenet.edu), which helps registrars, admissions officers and other professionals recognize military educational experiences in terms of civilian academic credit. Since 1945, ACE has provided a collaborative link between the U.S. Department of Defense and higher education through the review of military training and experiences for the award of equivalent college credits.

May has worked at VGCC since December 2003, when the college first established its Pharmacy Technology program. VGCC’s program prepares individuals to assist pharmacists with the technical duties involved with pharmacy operations. Graduates may be employed in a variety of settings, including hospitals, drug stores, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and long-term care facilities. This one-year diploma program is offered at the college’s main campus in Vance County. For more information on Pharmacy Technology , call Carla May at (252) 738-3482.
