VGCC Community Band to present free outdoor concert on Mother’s Day

The Vance-Granville Community Band will hold its third annual outdoor concert, as a special treat for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 8. The program will begin at 4 p.m. at the Gazebo on VGCC’s main campus in Vance County. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the VGCC Civic Center. Admission is free and the public is invited. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Michael Stephenson, the college’s music instructor and director of the band, said that the concert program will feature a medley of Beatles songs, selections from the Broadway classics “Phantom of the Opera” and “West Side Story,” as well as marches and popular band works. J.F. Webb High School band director Clint McCaskill will join Stephenson as a guest conductor.

Formed in 2008, the community band is a combination of students and interested citizens. All four counties of the VGCC service area (Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin) are represented in the band, which has grown to approximately 50 members.
