VGCC golf team travels for second and third competitions

After winning its first match, the recently formed Vance-Granville Community College golf team suffered its first defeat in the team’s second competition. The Surry Community College team won with a score of 328 to VGCC’s 382 on March 10 at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin. Lawton Perry, Tommy Overcash, Michael Reese and Joshua Lorenzo played for VGCC.

The Vance-Granville team had been scheduled to play Surry at home in Henderson on March 2, but that match had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. The match has not yet been re-scheduled.

On March 17, VGCC traveled to the Pine Hollow Golf Course in Clayton to participate in Johnston Community College’s Spring Invitational Tournament. Student Phillip Hicks joined the four who played on March 10. The VGCC team came in third, with a team score of 361, in the seven-college tournament. Lawton Perry’s score of 81 was the lowest individual score for the Vanguards. With a score of 327, Wake Technical Community College was the winner of the tournament, barely edging out Louisburg College, which scored 328.

Next, VGCC will again play a team from Louisburg College on Tuesday, Mar. 24 starting at 1 p.m. at Henderson Country Club.
