VGCC offers Job Readiness class at ESC

Area residents visiting the Employment Security Commission’s Vance County office will now have easy access to a Vance-Granville Community College course that will help them with employment-search and job-keeping skills. The ESC office, located on Andrews Avenue in Henderson, is among the college’s convenient community locations. A “Career Planning and Job Readiness” class will be held there from March 23 through April 2. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday from 2:30 until 5 p.m. in the ESC board room.

The course is offered by VGCC’s Human Resources Development (HRD) Department. HRD classes are designed to help the unemployed and the underemployed with career planning and workplace skills. HRD classes are free to qualified applicants, including those who are unemployed.

The instructor for the course, Kathy Strickland, has business and human resources experience. Interview skills, typing skills, online résumé and application preparation, cover letters and thank-you letters will be among the many topics covered in the course. Students will also be able to use the JobLink computer lab located at the ESC office for help with writing and updating résumés.

Classes will be limited in size. Anyone interested in participating in the program should contact ESC manager Renée F. Taylor at (252) 438-6129, or VGCC Human Resources Development coordinator Kyle Burwell at (252) 738-3276.
