Four Vance-Granville Community College classes scheduled to begin in May at the college’s South Campus, located on N.C. 56 between Creedmoor and Butner, offer area residents the chance to learn new job and language skills.

A Commercial Cleaning course will be held on South Campus, with classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., May 19 – August 4. Instructor Jeff Jones stated that “this course will teach the student proper procedures of building sanitation. Topics addressed will include basic cleaning chemistry, practices and tools, selecting chemical products, safety, equipment operation and use of powered equipment, and safe handling of hazardous and infectious materials.” Successful students will earn a certificate of completion and 6.0 Continuing Education Units. The cost of the course is $60, and handbooks will be included.

A Conversational Spanish course will be offered on Thursday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., May 22 – July 31. South Campus Director Jason Snelling says that this introductory course is recommended for anyone interested in learning to speak, listen, read, and write in Spanish, but particularly for those who interact with the Spanish-speaking population at the workplace. Students will earn 2.5 Continuing Education Units, and a certificate of completion is awarded to all students who successfully pass. The cost of the course is $55, plus the cost of a textbook.

Another form of communication, Sign Language, will be the subject of a class that will meet on Thursday nights from 6 to 9 p.m., May 22 through July 31. “This course will lay a basic foundation of knowledge in American Sign Language,” said instructor Donna Snipes. Students who complete the course will have a basic understanding of American Sign Language and should be able to communicate effectively with a deaf person. Upon successfully completing the course, students will be awarded a certificate of completion and earn 3.0 Continuing Education Units. The cost of the course is $55.

VGCC’s South Campus will host a course in Basic Refrigeration and Air Conditioning on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6 to 9 p.m., starting May 27. This course introduces the basic operation process used in mechanical refrigeration and air conditioning systems. “Students will be able to identify basic refrigeration and air conditioning systems and components, explain the refrigeration process, and use the tools of the trade,” according to instructor Tim Fox. Persons interested in taking the course can register on the first day of class, May 27. The cost for this course is $60.
