VGCC dominates Louisburg College JV in fourth straight win

Vance-Granville Community College’s men’s basketball team made it 2-0 against the junior-varsity squad of nearby rival Louisburg College with a 101-73 win at home on Feb. 21. In November, the Vanguards started the regular season with a 77-64 win over the JV Hurricanes at Louisburg.

VGCC head coach Avery Wilson called the victory “our best defensive game of the season.” He said that the defense was led by the dominating performance of Denzell Alston of Warrenton.

Meanwhile, with 15 points, Alston was also one of six players scoring in double figures, demonstrating the team’s offensive balance. Others were Jayson Brown of Raleigh (17) and Henderson residents E.J. Henderson, Shantel Harrington (both with 16), Antonio Henderson (12) and Gianni Jefferson (11).

The VGCC Vanguards (11-4) will try to finish their season undefeated at home on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. when they face Johnston Community College at Western Vance High School in Henderson. There is no charge for admission to VGCC home games.
