VGCC Loses on the road at Mt. Zion

In what head coach Avery Wilson called a “tough, heart-breaking loss,” the Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards men’s basketball team fell to the prep squad at Mount Zion Christian Academy, 89-85, in Durham on Jan. 25.

VGCC (now 7-2) and Mt. Zion were tied at 47 at halftime, and the lead went back and forth throughout the second half. The game’s outcome was in doubt into the final minute of play.

With 25 points, Jayson Brown of Raleigh led Vance-Granville in scoring. Jeremy Lenoir, also of Raleigh, contributed 14 points. Henderson resident E.J. Henderson and Michael Wright of Oxford put up 12 points each.

“I’m proud of my guys,” Coach Wilson said. “They fought hard against a bigger team, one of the top prep teams in the nation.”

The next test for the Vanguards will take place Jan. 31, when VGCC is scheduled to play Central Carolina Community College in Sanford. The team returns home on Feb. 8 to play the Louisburg College junior varsity squad at Western Vance High School at 7 p.m. There is no charge for admission to VGCC home games.
