VGCC Names New Deans

Two academic divisions at Vance-Granville Community College are under the leadership of new deans this semester. Dr. Ray Goldberg, the new Dean of Health Sciences, and Dr. Michael Ellis, the new Dean of Arts and Sciences, both joined the VGCC staff on January 2.

“Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Ellis are both outstanding additions to the college,” VGCC president Randy Parker said. “They will add new perspectives to their divisions, both of which have long traditions of quality instruction.”

Dr. Ray Goldberg comes to the college from the State University of New York at Cortland, where he has taught since 1977 and served in several administrative capacities, most recently as the Associate Dean of the School of Professional Studies. Goldberg, who has recently moved to Youngsville, said that he has high hopes for seeing the Health Sciences programs expand, while maintaining the level of quality that VGCC has established. “An increasing elderly population means an increasing demand for health care professionals,” Goldberg noted. VGCC’s Health Sciences division includes programs such as Nursing, Human Services, Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technology and Radiography.

Goldberg received his Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Toledo, his master’s in Health Education from the University of South Carolina and his bachelor’s in Health and Physical Education from the University of North Carolina – Pembroke.

Dr. Michael Ellis has taught in the Communication programs at East Carolina University, Pitt Community College, Ohio State University, Barry University, Broward Community College and, most recently, Mississippi State University. Since 1985, he has also served as campus minister, education minister, and preaching minister for churches in Mississippi, Florida, and North Carolina.

Ellis will now oversee a division that includes the college transfer program, in addition to Bioprocess Technology, Early Childhood and education programs. “My goal as Dean is to encourage men and women of all backgrounds to engage the Arts and Sciences and apply the lessons learned to improving our communities,” Ellis said.

Ellis received his B.A. in Speech Communication from Indiana University, his master’s degree in Adult Education from East Carolina University, and his Ph.D. in Communication with an emphasis in Educational Technology from Ohio State University.
