VGCC Dominates Piedmont in First Home Basketball Game

As his players prepared to take the floor for their first home game, Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball coach Avery Wilson of Louisburg encouraged the students to play with the same level of intensity they had displayed in their season-opening victory over Louisburg College’s JV team. That they did, as the VGCC Vanguards used a stifling defense and a fast-paced offense to overwhelm the visiting team from Piedmont Community College, 149-43, at Western Vance High School on Nov. 10. VGCC led 76-20 at halftime.

With 32 points, Jeremy Lenoir of Raleigh led eight VGCC players in double figures. Henderson residents Antonio Henderson, E.J. Henderson, Gianni Jefferson and Sekeidrick Baskerville scored 23, 20, 15 and 12 points, respectively. Michael Wright of Oxford contributed 18 points. Rodney Alexander of Warrenton and John Holley of Raleigh put up 10 points each.

The 2-0 Vance-Granville Vanguards now turn their attention to a tough week that includes two home games. On Wednesday, Nov. 14, a strong team from Roanoke-Chowan Community College will visit VGCC, followed by the Virginia Heat on Friday, Nov. 16. Both games are to be played at Western Vance High School in Henderson, and both begin at 7 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
