VGCC Basketball Team Splits Two Scrimmages

Vance-Granville Community College’s new men’s basketball team warmed up for its regular season with a pair of scrimmages. In the first, on October 16, the VGCC Vanguards defeated a squad from Kittrell Job Corps Center 82-56. VGCC was led in scoring by Jeremy Lenoir of Raleigh with 28 points, followed by Jayson Brown of Raleigh with 15.

On October 18, the Vanguards traveled to face Davidson County Community College, in what was VGCC’s first intercollegiate basketball game. The result of the scrimmage was a hard-fought, heartbreaking 105-103 loss for VGCC in overtime. With 32 points, Henderson resident E.J. Henderson was the leading scorer, while Jayson Brown contributed 22 points.

The Vanguards will have two more shots at the DCCC Storm during the regular season. On Dec. 12 at 7 p.m., DCCC is scheduled to play VGCC at the Vanguards’ home court, Western Vance High School in Henderson, and Vance-Granville will travel to Lexington on Jan. 9, 2008.

First, the Vanguards will travel to Louisburg College to face that school’s junior varsity squad for VGCC’s first regular season game, on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
