VGCC Students Inducted into Honors Society

Vance-Granville Community College recognized 75 of its students who were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges, on April 22, in the Civic Center on the college’s main campus.

VGCC students honored with induction into Phi Theta Kappa have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 in associate degree curriculum programs and have completed 12 credit hours toward their degrees.

VGCC Academic Skills Center coordinator Evelyn Hall and instructors Phillip Mondou, Maureen Walters and Laura Pittard are the faculty advisors for VGCC’s PTK chapter. Hall told the new inductees and their families and friends in attendance that Phi Theta Kappa began in 1918 with chapters in eight women’s junior colleges in Missouri. VGCC’s chapter of PTK, Alpha Sigma Chi, was chartered in 1991. The letters Phi Theta Kappa stand for the Greek words for “Wisdom,” “Aspiration” and “Purity.”

VGCC President Randy Parker and Dean of Arts and Sciences Dr. Michael Ellis also spoke during the ceremony. “We congratulate all of you who have decided that excelling in education is important to you,” Ellis said to the inductees. Ellis said that while scholarship is the first aim of PTK, it also encourages fellowship, leadership development and service to others.
