April Culbreth of Oxford was one of two North Carolina residents who received the Governor’s Award for Excellence — Outstanding Workforce Development Adult Participant Oct. 26. To be eligible for the award, a person must have completed a course of study, and have had some obstacles in the pursuit of completing the course of study. Upon completion of her GED in 2002, April enrolled in Vance-Granville Community College to pursue a nursing degree. The college’s Workforce Investment Act program assisted April with tuition and other expenses for school. She completed her prerequisite courses and was accepted into the nursing program in August 2004. While caring for her children, relocating twice, and going through a divorce, April maintained a high B average. She was awarded Academic Achievement scholarship awards and selected to serve as Marshal during the May 2005 nursing pinning ceremony. In May of this year, April graduated from Vance-Granville Community College with an overall grade point average of 3.18 and an associate’s degree in nursing as a registered nurse. She passed the nursing licensure exam and is now employed at John Umstead Hospital in Butner as a registered nurse. In addition to the award, April received a cash gift donated by Duke Power Company. April is a well deserved recipient of the 2006 Governor’s Award for Excellence.
