VGCC Defeats Stevens Prep 102-90

Vance-Granville Community College’s men’s basketball team has exceeded the expectations of its head coach, Avery Wilson, by remaining undefeated as of the beginning of the second week of 2008.

The VGCC Vanguards are 7-0 after defeating Raleigh-based Stevens Prep Academy 102-90 on Jan. 5. Having only practiced a few times since a holiday break, Wilson said that his players were a bit rusty at first but came back to beat the well-coached Golden Griffins. Stevens Prep came into the VGCC contest on an eight-game winning streak.

Jeremy Lenoir of Raleigh, a Stevens Prep alumnus playing against his former team, led VGCC in scoring with 23 points. Jayson Brown of Raleigh scored 18, Henderson resident E.J. Henderson put up 16, and Michael Wright of Oxford contributed 15 points along with 15 rebounds. Gianni Jefferson of Henderson contributed 10 points, as did Denzell Alston of Warrenton, who joined the team for the first time after sitting out the first six games while recovering from wrist surgery.

The Vanguards now hit the road for a tough series of away games, beginning with a visit to Davidson County Community College in Lexington on Jan. 9. The team returns home on Feb. 8 to play the Louisburg College junior varsity squad at Western Vance High School at 7 p.m. There is no charge for admission to VGCC home games.
