VGCC Pulls Out Win Over DCCC

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team has a 6-0 record after defeating the Davidson County Community College Storm in a 101-93 thriller at home on Dec. 12. It was a high-scoring affair, much like the first meeting between the two teams on Oct. 18, a scrimmage that ended in a 105-103 victory for DCCC.

The VGCC Vanguards were down by eight points at halftime, but head coach Avery Wilson was confident that his players would make a strong push in the second half, as they so often have. Wilson added that his game plan involved allowing DCCC standout Justin W. Strickland to “do his thing” while shutting down the Storm’s other shooters. Apparently, the plan was a success, as Strickland scored 47 points, but only one of his teammates scored in double figures. Strickland was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending on Dec. 2.

Wilson said that the Vanguards showed excellent balance on offense, with five players in double figures. Jeremy Lenoir of Raleigh led the team in scoring with 23 points. Michael Wright of Oxford contributed 19, followed by Henderson residents E.J. Henderson with 17, Gianni Jefferson with 15 and Antonio Henderson with 10.

After a break for the holidays, the team will return home to face a team from Stevens Prep Academy at Western Vance High School in Henderson on Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. There is no charge for admission to VGCC home games.
