VGCC Vanguards Victorious at Louisburg

Though the lead went back and forth between the Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team and the Louisburg College men’s junior varsity squad, VGCC pulled away to win 77-64 at Louisburg on Nov. 3. It was the first regular-season game for the VGCC Vanguards and the college’s first victory over another college team.

The Vanguards had five players in double figures: Jayson Brown of Raleigh with 15 points, Henderson resident E.J. Henderson with 14, Jeremy Lenoir of Raleigh with 13, Rodney Alexander of Warrenton with 11 and Michael Wright of Oxford with 10. Wright also contributed 15 rebounds.

VGCC Coach Avery Wilson, a Louisburg resident, called the game “a great victory” for the new team. The JV Hurricanes and the Vanguards seemed to be evenly matched, and Louisburg had the lead going into halftime. Wilson said he was proud of how his players conducted themselves and thankful for the VGCC fans who joined the team on the road.

Next, Vance-Granville will host Piedmont Community College at Western Vance High School in Henderson on Saturday, Nov. 10. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
