VGCC South Campus Helps Residents become Money Smart

Area residents can learn how to be smarter about using their monetary resources by taking a new Vance-Granville Community College course. The course, called “Money Smart,” will be offered at the college’s South Campus, located on N.C. 56 between Creedmoor and Butner, on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Feb. 12 through March 6.

The Money Smart curriculum helps individuals build financial knowledge, develop financial confidence and use banking services effectively. “The more people know about credit and other services, the more likely they are to increase savings, buy homes, and improve their financial well-being,” according to the course’s instructor, Allison Fletcher.

Students will cover topics such as preparing a budget; identity theft; predatory lending; preparing for emergencies; restoring, rebuilding and maintaining a good credit report; deciding when and how to use credit; and determining if you are ready to become a homeowner.

Allison Fletcher is the owner of LIFE 101, a counseling and education service based in Durham. LIFE 101 provides classes and personal consultation on credit restoration and rebuilding, budget and debt management, mortgage loans and refinancing, identity theft and other financial issues.

The cost of the course is $55.
