VGCC Students learn how to Square Dance

While discussing folk music with his American Music class, Vance-Granville Community College music instructor Michael Stephenson asked how many of his students had ever attended a square dance. “After seeing only two hands raised, I knew that there was no way for them to fully appreciate this wonderful music without experiencing a square dance first hand,” Stephenson said. He investigated to see if he could find a local expert. The owner of the Ridgeway Opry House referred him to a square dance “caller” from Warren County named Steward Rooker. Rooker visited with Stephenson’s class and other classes who chose to join them on Jan. 29. Rooker taught students the basics of how a square dance works, including the various terms used, such as “promenade.” As Stephenson explained, square dancing is broadly defined as a folk dance for four couples. Stephenson’s course ( MUS 113 ) introduces various musical styles, influences, and composers of the United States from pre-Colonial times to the present.
