VGCC starts inaugural Golf season with victory

Vance-Granville Community College has formed its first golf team, which recently kicked off its first season by playing Louisburg College in the Hurricane Joist Tournament at The River Golf Course & Country Club in Bunn on Feb. 19. VGCC came away with the win in its first event, with a score of 382 to Louisburg College’s 414.

Five VGCC student-athletes, including Joshua Lorenzo, Tommy Overcash, Lawton Perry, Michael Reese and Phillip Hicks, braved cold weather and ground that was still slightly wet from recent rains.

The VGCC golf team will play as a club sport in 2009, with plans to pursue National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) status for the program in the future. VGCC’s home course will be Henderson Country Club, located off Oxford Road in Henderson. Admission to all VGCC golf events is free and open to the public. VGCC’s first home match will take place on Monday, March 2, when the Vanguards host Surry Community College, starting at 12:30 p.m. VGCC will return the favor by visiting Surry on Tuesday, March 10 at 12:30 p.m. at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin.

The VGCC golf team is coached by Frank Hester of Henderson. Hester, who farms and does erosion-control work, has golfed for many years and has played on the Keller Williams Amateur Golf Tour. He helped organize and played in the Miss North Carolina Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament. A graduate of Henderson High School and Wake Technical Community College (one of the golf team’s opponents this year), Hester plays in many local golf tournaments and is the president of the board of directors for the Kerr Lake Country Club.
