VGCC Offers Free Screenings, Counseling At 2006 Health Fair

“A Health Fair for the 21st Century” will be conducted April 11 at Vance-Granville Community College.

The health fair will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Civic Center on VGCC’s main campus in Vance County. It is free and open to anyone in the community, as well as students and staff of the college.

A wide variety of health screenings will be offered during the event. Maria Parham Medical Center personnel will conduct cholesterol screenings and provide advice on how to stop smoking. Vance-Granville Mental Health will provide substance abuse counseling.

Spine stress testing will be done by Oxford Orthopedics, and VGCC nursing students will conduct blood pressure screenings. Pharmacy Technology students will analyze the medications you’re taking and teach how to most safely use them.

Blood sugar testing will be done, SunMed will demonstrate durable medical equipment, and Henderson YMCA will recommend healthy exercise for all ages.

Numerous activities will be conducted for children attending the health fair. Students and instructors of the Criminal Justice Department will fingerprint children and take identification pictures of them. The DARE Drug Prevention car and a fire engine will be on display, and children’s games will be conducted.

Numerous health-related agencies will have exhibits and pass out information about their activities. These include the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Carolina Donor Services, N.C. Blind Prevention Services, Maxim Home Health Services, and Alternative Health Practices.

VGCC invites everyone in the community to attend the 2006 Health Fair and take advantage of all the opportunities it offers to help improve and manage one’s health.
