VGCC Honors 17 College Transfer Scholars; Theater Arts Instructor Gets Faculty Award

Vance-Granville Community College honored 17 of its highest-ranking students as College Transfer Scholars for 2004 during its spring convocation program April 29 in the college auditorium.

Begun in 1988 on campus, the scholarship program is the school’s only award that is determined by a vote of the faculty. To qualify, candidates must have a 3.0 average, must have completed 22 hours in the College Transfer program, and must be nominated by two program faculty members. The entire College Transfer faculty approves all selectees. This year’s recipients were chosen from a field of more than 600 students.

Dr. John J. Beck, chairman of the General College and College Transfer Program, presided over the ceremony and made presentations to: Jennifer L. Fuller, Sandra M. Newton, Jeremy S. Overcash and Donald W. Weaver, all of Henderson; Charles A. Barnes, Kittrell; Florence G. Blackwell, Mechelle Currin, Christopher D. Eaton and Sarah L. Williams, Oxford; Eric D. Dalman of Creedmoor; James S. Mangum, Butner; Christopher R. Dethmers, David K. Lehman and Christopher S. Reid, Warrenton; Robert C. Ernst, Franklinton; Rachel L. Garner and Rebecca L. Garner, Wake Forest

Beck also named Betsy Henderson, Speech/Theater Arts instructor, as recipient of the Chairman’s Award for excellence in instruction. Dr. Beck noted that Henderson has done an outstanding job, particularly this year when several drama productions have been staged on campus. “It’s amazing how they can do so much with so little, ” he added.

In addition, the Chairman lauded the entire College Transfer faculty for being part of a team that is now working to offer a broader curriculum to a more diverse student body. Vance-Granville is providing more classes in science and math than ever before, and its instructors in all areas are working hard to keep up with the challenges of new programs by participating in workshops, conferences and other professional training, Dr. Beck said.

Dean of Curriculum Marsha Nelson welcomed those in attendance and congratulated the Scholars on their achievements. She reminded those who plan to continue their education that “…you are prepared, no matter where you choose to go – UNC, Duke, N.C. State… We have not watered down any of our classes, so you should have no trouble succeeding in your future studies.”
