VGCC Golf team starts third season

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s golf team plans to play in at least seven intercollegiate matches or tournaments this spring during the team’s third season. The 2011 season is the second for the team at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) level, having started as a club sport in 2009.

The Vanguards opened the season by hosting a match on March 3 at the team’s home course, Henderson Country Club. Among the competitors were student-athletes from Johnston Community College, Surry Community College and Louisburg College. The team from Johnston CC came in first, with a team score of 331. Taylor Thornton of Johnston CC was the top individual scorer, shooting a 78. VGCC student Derek Jones of Henderson had the best score for the Vanguards, with a 92. Also playing for VGCC was Fred Baker of Wake Forest.

The 2011 schedule includes road trips to Louisburg College, Johnston Community College and Central Carolina Community College. After the regular season ends, the VGCC team is scheduled to participate in the NJCAA Region X Championship Tournament on April 24-26 at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raleigh.

This is the first season for new VGCC golf coach Jim Schwab. Schwab is a professional golf instructor and a retired Duke University police officer.
