VGCC Awards Record 307 Scholarships at Annual Ceremony

Vance-Granville Community College awarded scholarships to a record 307 full-time students at Scholarship Day ceremonies held Sept. 20 in the college’s Civic Center. President Randy Parker said that Scholarship Day honors the “best of the best” of Vance-Granville students, and it is one of the most exciting days of the school year. He went on to thank the donors who support the college’s Endowment Fund, many of whom were on hand to present scholarships in person. “We are here to fulfill the dreams of our students, and without your support, many of these students could not attend Vance-Granville,” Parker told them. He said that approximately 5,000 scholarships had been awarded to VGCC students since 1982.

Parker announced that 12 Presidential Scholar Awards, 79 Presidential Merit Awards, 201 Academic Achievement Award scholarships and 15 annual (non-endowed) scholarships were awarded. The total value of scholarships awarded to full-time students for the 2006-2007 school year was $210,000, Parker said.

Endowed scholarships are funded by interest earned on the Endowment Fund and Scholarship Program. With assets of more than $5 million, this is one of the largest community college endowment funds in the state. Scholarships have been established by industries, businesses, individuals, civic groups, churches and the college’s faculty and staff to assist deserving VGCC students in their academic endeavors.

Several new scholarships were awarded for the first time, including four that were the result of gifts from GlaxoSmithKline, two nursing scholarships presented by Franklin Regional Medical Center, a Maria Parham Medical Center Guild Nursing Academic Achievement scholarship, the Lloyd Gabriel Memorial scholarship, a Myrtle Jane Pruitt Memorial scholarship, an annual scholarship in memory of former VGCC instructor Walter J. Rublein and a Presidential Scholar Award in honor of Patricia Graham, a former VGCC staff member.
