SNCAE Acknowledges ‘Read Across America’

The Vance-Granville Community College chapter of SNCAE will acknowledge a year-long reading extravaganza that culminates on Monday, March 3, 2003, the birthday of the late great Dr. Seuss.

On March 3, the National Education Association is calling for every child to be reading in the company of a caring adult.

Individuals, such as local police officers, firefighters, the town mayor, radio personalities, pastors, high school quarterbacks, or grandmothers, parents and friends are encouraged to be ‘guest readers’ at their child’s school during this campaign.

Other suggestions to encourage reading participation — if resources allow — include making arrangements for a birthday cake in honor of Dr. Seuss. If funds are in short supply, find out if any of your parents are enthusiastic bakers. Easy alternatives are cupcakes or cookies.

Everybody wants to wear the famous Cat in the Hat hat. You can buy hats from an online Cat-alog (

), or you can make your own from red and white construction paper. A large 39 oz. coffee can has a good diameter to serve as a pattern for the crown and you can trace around a large dinner plate for the brim. This makes a fun class project.

Because children appreciate tangible acknowledgements for their efforts, making certificates of participation for every students is also suggested. Pre-designed certificates can be downloaded on your computer if you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. Visit the online Resources area to see a list of available items (

).
