‘Aliens Invade’ VGCC Stage For Student Play March 18-20

Aliens from an advanced outer space culture land in a small town and take a young girl back with them. They leave behind one of their species who blends into the community and observes the residents there.

That’s the beginning of a two-act play being produced, directed and acted by students at Vance-Granville Community College. “Resident Alien” will be performed Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 18-20, in the auditorium of Building 2 on Vance-Granville’s main campus in Vance County. All performances begin at 8 p.m.

Blakely Chorpening, a College Transfer student from Franklinton, is directing the play. She is a veteran of plays presented by VGCC students, and this is her first directing attempt.

Chorpening said “Resident Alien” is a modern comedy that has been performed in small theaters in the United States. The left-behind alien explores relationships among the small town’s residents who prove to be more “alien” than the visitor.

Betsy Henderson, VGCC Theater Arts and Speech instructor, is the advisor for the production, but she said this is totally a student project. All six performers are students, some of whom have acted in past productions. For two of the cast members, this will be their first time in front of the lights, having served in technical roles previously.

In addition to the actors, all the set design and technical aspects of the production are being performed by students.

The public is invited to attend performances of “Resident Alien.” Tickets are $5, and reservations may be made by calling 252-738-3371.
