New Year offers new opportunities to learn language, arts and crafts at VGCC
Vance-Granville Community College has scheduled several personal enrichment classes to start soon on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County, offering area residents a variety of fun opportunities to learn new skills or develop hobbies.
“Beginning Spanish,” taught by José Martínez, will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 until 9 p.m., Feb. 4 through March 27. Students will learn the basics of the Spanish language, including common phrases and grammatical cues, and they will gain a foundation in beginning to understand and speak Spanish. The cost of this course is $85.
A Crochet class with instructor Jennifer Campbell will meet on Thursdays from 6 until 8 p.m., Feb. 7 through Feb. 28. In this class, students will learn basic crochet techniques and will complete a project. The cost of this course is $25.
Tracey Dorge will teach a one-day “Jewelry: Wire-Wrapped Rings” class on Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 10 a.m. until Noon. The cost is $15. All materials except needle-nose pliers are included. In this class, students will make their own custom wire-wrapped ring, as well as learn to wire wrap jewelry using various materials.
Margaret Hilpert will teach two Felting classes. A Basic Feltmaking “Make & Take” class will be held on Feb. 7, with the option of a morning (9 a.m. – Noon) or evening (6-9 p.m.) session. The cost is $27 and includes all materials. Students will learn how to make handmade felt and basic felting technique, and they will complete a piece of felt artwork in this class. This class will be offered again on March 7 with the same option of a morning or evening class. Students who attended the Feb. 7 class might want to bring their felt from the first class to Hilpert’s “Embellishing Your Handmade Felt” class, on Feb. 28, with the option of a morning (9 a.m. – Noon) or evening (6-9 p.m.) class. The cost is $27. Students will learn how to enhance and design a piece of felt, using several different techniques.
