VGCC Names Women’s Volleyball Coaches

Shervi Barnes of Courtland, Virginia has been named the head coach for the women’s volleyball program at Vance-Granville Community College. Krista Carlson, a resident of Granville County, is the new assistant coach. The new coaches are preparing for VGCC’s second season playing volleyball at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) level.

Barnes (pictured above, left) began playing organized volleyball as a junior at Southampton High School in Virginia. She went on to play volleyball (as well as softball) for three years at Virginia State University, which competes in NCAA Division II. Her primary playing position was outside hitter. Barnes returned to Virginia State as the head women’s volleyball coach and softball coach for two seasons. She has also coached girls’ basketball at Southampton High School. Barnes earned a bachelor of science degree and a master’s degree in sports management at Virginia State. She is certified to teach in both North Carolina and Virginia, and currently works as a health/physical education/driver’s education teacher in the Richmond Public Schools in Richmond, Virginia.

Carlson (pictured above, right) has played volleyball since elementary school. She was a middle hitter and defensive specialist for her high school team at Fairview High School in Ohio, and during those years also was a member of the Viking Volleyball Club and the prestigious Cleveland Volleyball Company. Carlson continued her playing career as an outside hitter and defensive specialist at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. She has also served as an assistant coach for youth volleyball in Ohio. Carlson is starting her second semester as an instructor for VGCC’s Criminal Justice program. She teaches courses online, at night, and at Louisburg and Bunn High Schools. She is also an officer with the Wake Forest Police Department and a graduate of the Basic Law Enforcement Training program at VGCC.

Tryouts for the VGCC Vanguards volleyball team will be held on Aug. 13 from 1 until 5 p.m. and on Aug. 14 from noon until 4 p.m. at the Western Vance High School Gym in Henderson. The volleyball season is scheduled to begin with an away match on Aug. 27, with the first match at home on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. The Vanguards’ home court continues to be at Aycock Recreation Complex in Henderson. The season ends with a regional tournament in November. VGCC’s opponents will include colleges from all over the state.
